Chicago – Ann Arbor
by Neil (hence, really short)
A day for decompressing….
We left Chicago and some heavy traffic behind, and raced along the sandy shores of Lake Michigan. We stopped for a random street festival in New Buffalo, the first exit over the Michigan state line. We had a fantastic diner breakfast, watched an amusing boogie-board competition, and indulged the kids in some paddling and general old-fashioned vacation fun.
Which was good, because then we pounded out some miles across the length of the state as far as Ann Arbor, where Kirsti took care of laundry and blogging, and I took the kids into town to see just why so many NA kids go to U Michigan. Lots of pleasant bars and restaurants, and enough greenery to justify the name Tree City, but best of all there was a gang of Indian fellas playing cricket! Don’t know what it would be like up here in the winter, though!
Falling asleep watching the first events from the Beijing Olympics, I tried to recognize locations from my trip to China with NA students back in June. I haven’t really had time to think it through how amazing it was before this- the summer I have been spoilt with almost too much travel. We didn’t actually go inside any of the venues, just drove past them in the rain, but still we got a sense of the excitement and pride of the local people at what was about to happen. I hope it goes well, and that the cultural exchange involved brings results in terms of a demand by the people for greater freedom in China, and at the same time greater appreciation by visitors of the country’s achievements in the last few years. Maite, Kareen, Ling, and students, hope you are enjoying the spectacle, too!
The great feather hunter!
