White Sox and Red Sox

Friday, August 8th
Bloomington, IL – Chicago, IL

We had a few late starts to the day for various ridiculous and boring reasons that I won’t go into here. But we finally made it – cheerfully even – into the city of Chicago at 1:00 PM.

Five highlights of Chicago:

1.Riding in the top of a double-decker train care (Metra) into Chicago from the Calumet parking lot 40 minutes outside of the city.

2. Making the pilgrimage to Georges Seurat's Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte at the Art Institute of Chicago

3.The water park within the Milenium Park. It’s awesome…a good half an hour of watching Eleni and Alex run around

4.King Lear statue and architecture on the Magnificent Mile

5. Meeting my old friend/student from Kuwait who now lives right in the heart of Chicago. Juveria is in the University of Chicago MBA program and working full time in finance. We had dinner at an Indian restaurant and left the city around 7:30.

That is right, just 6 hours in this great city. Sigh. And back to our song, "the day the road trip died..."

Outdoor auditorium in Millennium Park

Outside the Art Institute
The Sears Tower (visiting all of the architectural sites here will be another trip someday- without little ones!)

This is part of the water park - the faces change and the water is not always spouting so the kids all scream when the face "spits!" I'm not sure you can see Alex that well, but he is right there in the middle of the mix!

There were several Japanese tourists taking photos of Eleni at the water park!

King Lear

Outside of the Chicago Tribune building are wonderful quotes and pieces of rocks from around the world
Part of the pyramids! You can also touch part of Mt. McKinley, the Great Wall of China, and part of Westminster Abbey!

Juveria and me (you'll see what I was laughing at in the next photo!)

We got back on the road in search of the hotel we had booked ahead in advance (phew!). Route 80 appeared! Oh, there was something rather exciting about being on Route 80; we could be in Parsippany, NJ in two days!

We (all!) fell into a wonderful sleep while watching the opening of the Olympics in Beijing (and not the Red Sox vs the White Sox - another game Neil missed).
